The Vaginal Microbiome & Period Pain.. Are They Connected?

Why do some periods hurt more than others.. even when everything seems "normal"?, turns out it might have less to do with hormones alone, and more to do with the tiny ecosystem living in your vagina.

The vaginal microbiome, full of protective bacteria like "Lactobacillus crispatus", keeps inflammation (and pain) in check. But when that balance is thrown off, cramps can hit harder. So maybe the question isn't just "Why does my period hurt?" but "What's happening in my vagina?"

A small study looked at the vaginal microbiomes of 46 healthy women in their 20s who weren’t using hormonal contraception.

What the research found?

They were grouped by their period pain levels:

Mild Cramps - Those with less pain had more Lactobacillus crispatus - a protective bacteria that helps maintain vaginal balance.

Severe cramps - Those with more pain showed higher levels of Gardnerella and other bacteria often linked to vaginal imbalance.

Most women have never been told their vaginal bacteria could influence period cramps…

Your vagina has its own ecosystem; a balance of good bacteria (mostly Lactobacillus) keeps things calm, hydrated and protected. When that balance shifts; say from stress, antibiotics, use of scented period products or hormonal changes - bad bacteria takes over. That imbalance doesn’t just affect discharge or odour… it can increase inflammation, irritate tissues and make period pain much worse.

Healing your microbiome = Supporting your cycle

Small steps that make a difference:

1.Avoid scented and toxin-filled period care: Choose breathable unscented products and change them every 4-6 hours.

2.Hydrate & nourish from within: Think probiotic-rich foods (like yoghurt or kefir) and fibre (broccoli, spinach) to feed good bacteria.

3.Prioritise rest and stress relief: High cortisol (stress hormone) can alter your body’s bacterial harmony.

4.Avoid over-washing or harsh soaps: Your vagina cleans itself; gentle water and mild cleansers are enough.

Because when your microbiome thrives, your periods often do too!
